Undergraduate
Standards, Evaluation, and Appeals
The Department has several methods of evaluating the work of its students. Most courses have university final examinations, others have take-home or classroom exams. In nearly all HIS courses, the final mark is determined on the basis of written work and some form of examination. In lecture-tutorial courses and in seminars the final mark is also based upon student participation.
Regular attendance is expected in all courses. The requirements and the method of evaluation are announced in the classroom at the beginning of term in all courses; many of the course requirements can be found with the course descriptions.
N.B. Students should make sure that they understand the requirements in any course they are taking. If students are unclear about course requirements they should approach the instructor directly. It is particularly important that students understand the Department’s policy in regard to plagiarism. “A Guide to Essay Writing and Statement on Plagiarism“ is available online and from the Department. Misunderstandings or problems within a course, which cannot be settled between the student and instructor, are to be referred to the Associate Chair.
All students are expected to abide by the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters.
Appeals:
The Department’s policy on appeals and form for appealing the marking of term work is available here: grade appeal form.
