Welcome to the Department of History

The world around us is shaped by multiple, interwoven pasts. Our department offers exciting opportunities to interpret these pasts and probe their possible future significance through research, education and life-long learning. Historical inquiry as we practice it bridges the humanities and social sciences. It links empiricism with theory. It crosses disciplines and geographical boundaries.

At the undergraduate level, the department offers rich and broadly diversified programs of study. Graduate students benefit from an exceptionally enriched experience where instruction is offered in all major areas of historical scholarship by a tri-campus graduate faculty of approximately seventy members. The tri-campus graduate department is among the largest and most comprehensive history departments in North America.
