Field: Modern China and East Asia, nation and empire

Professor Lam’s research and teaching covers modern China and East Asia, with special emphases on nation and empire, cultural studies, and historiography. At present, his research examines the rise of modern technologies of government and the politics of knowledge in the colonial and semicolonial contexts. He is completing a book on the emergence of “the social” as a field of knowledge and practice in China during the turn of the twentieth century. He has also written articles on nationalism and the emerging neoliberal order in post-socialist China.
